Keeping Up with Your New Year’s Goals

Already 2 weeks into the New Year means it’s time for a resolution checkpoint. How are your goals coming along?

2018 was filled with many ups and downs and a lot of new changes. New relationships, new job, new career path, new car; and most importantly, new goals.

My job, like most office jobs is sitting at my desk for 8 hours a day. This prompted me to evaluate my lifestyle outside of work and I realized that I needed to start making positive changes in my life. So, I started my healthy eating goals. Nothing crazy, just the same old reducing calories, eliminating sodas, avoiding sweets. And things were going really well… for about a week. And isn’t that how most New Year’s goals go? The first week of January is all smooth sailing, week two you’re still loyal but you might have messed up a couple of times and by week three it’s like what goals, hand me that soda!

I realized that if I wanted to make positive changes in my life, that they weren’t going to happen overnight. It was going to take time and there would be gradual growth to my success. I think we get caught up with a new idea and we try to achieve our goals before days end when in reality, you have to work and commit to your goals to achieve the success you crave.

Since October 2018, I’ve been better about following my goals completely and I wanted to share my tips to help you achieve your goals as well! Whether it’s healthy eating goals, graduation goals, budgeting goals I think it all follows the same blueprint.

  1. Clearly state your goals: Know EXACTLY what you want. For me, my goal was to reduce sugar in my diet to feel healthier throughout the day. Have clear, detailed goals so that down the line when you feel unmotivated you can look back and not be confused by what you initially wanted.
    1. Be as specific as you can: Keep your goals to the point
    2. Be as simple as you can: Don’t overthink it, don’t over complicate it
    3. Be as realistic as you can: Create achievable goals. Remember, you must build to your success, it doesn’t happen overnight. You know yourself and your capabilities the best.
  2. Visualize to internalize: Visualization is key! Create an inspiration board on Pinterest, write down your goal, print it out and tape it to your mirror, take a screen shot of your goal from your notes app and make that your lock screen. I created a Pinterest board. My board included tips from other people’s experiences. Knowing that I wasn’t alone in my journey, made it so much easier. My board also included sugar free substitutes to the snacks that I love. And I also added motivational quotes. I know myself and I know that I lose motivation quick. Whenever I felt like that I would just refer to my board, look over some of the quotes and get pumped for the next round.
  3. Don’t be in this alone: Talk to your friends/family about their New Year’s goals and be in this together. Knowing that everyone around you is trying to better themselves too is motivation in and of itself. Although my friends and I didn’t have the same goals, I knew that they too were trying to move forward so whenever I felt like giving up I would reach out to them for motivation.
    1. Create a group chat: Create a group chat to track your progress with your friends. Seeing everyone around you reaching their goals will motivate you to continue reaching yours
    2. Reach out for support: If you’re ever feeling unmotivated or wanting to give up, reach out for support. Remember, you’re not in this alone so chances are if you’re feeling like this, someone else is too. Receive positive reinforcement and provide it as well.
  4. Start small: Whether you have small goals or big goals, you can’t change yourself in a day. So remember to start small. I’m the type of person who has a soda with lunch and dinner. So I started to eliminate it from dinners about 3 times a week, and then 5 times and then I wasn’t drinking soda at all for dinner. And I slowly made the same progress during lunch too. It’s okay to ease yourself into your goals, positive lasting change doesn’t happen in the blink of an eye.
  5. Track your progress: For myself, my progress was the best motivation. If I started to feel like I’m stressed and a brownie sundae would make my day better, I would evaluate my progress. Did I feel more energized today? Did my skin look better today? I would go over all the new positive changes to motivate myself to keep moving forward.
  6. Don’t sweat the small stuff: Lastly, if you make a mistake, if you go back and indulge, don’t come down too hard on yourself for it. We’re all human and mistakes are bound to happen. Just promise yourself to be better.
